Department: Math Course: Grade 3
Essential and Enduring Learning: Recognize, combine the value of, and compare coins (penny, nickel, dime, quarter) and bills up to five dollars.
Curriculum Code: MA-03-04-03
Task: When given a collection of coins and one-dollar bills, more than one of each denomination, the student can identify the coins and determine the total value. The total value will not exceed five dollars. Students will also determine the fewest coins and bills needed to make a purchase. Real money should be used if possible.
Product: Identification of coins and the total value and a listing of denominations required for a purchase.

Level 4 Advanced All coins are correctly identified and the total value correct with no verbal prompts from teacher. Total value of currency is correct with most efficient combination.
Level 3 Proficient All coins are correctly identified and the total value correct with only one verbal prompt from teacher. Total value of currency is correct but may have one efficiency error.
Level 2 Partially Proficient Error in listing the coins or finding the total value. Total value of currency is correct but contains several efficiency errors.
Level 1 Non Proficient Both the list of coins and total value are incorrect. Total value is incorrect with several efficiency errors.

Scoring Process: Level 4 = Total 8
Level 3 = Total 6 - 7 with no score of 2
Level 2 = Total 4 - 5
Level 1 = Total 2 - 3

Indicator #1: Teacher will show an individual student or class a collection of currency. Students will list the denominations and determine the total value or teacher may choose to have students do this orally.
Indicator #2: Students will be asked to record the most efficient collection of currency to purchase the item.
