Campbell County School District - Assessment Rubric

Department: Science Course: Grade 4
Essential and Enduring Learning: Basic understanding of the sources of electricity, parallel and series circuits, and the importance of safety when involved with electricity.
Curriculum Code: SC-04-05-01 and SC-04-05-02
Task: Using bulbs, cells, wires, and clips, students will construct a teacher-specified electrical circuit. Focus will be on problem solving.
Product: Students will explain how the circuit works through a diagram and a list of tests that were used in developing the circuit. Students will also discuss what problems they encountered while designing the circuit.

Indicators

Knowledge of conductors and insulators Development of a simple circuit Development of a complex circuit
Level 4
Advanced
In addition to level 3, can classify randomly selected items and give rationale for response. Lights a bulb and explains why it works. Creates both circuits and explains the difference.
Level 3
Proficient
Generates a list of materials classified as conductors or insulators (10 each). 90% correct Lights a bulb using 2 wires and a cell. Creates both series and parallel circuits to light three or more bulbs light.
Level 2
Partially
Proficient
List 5-9 items for each list or misclassifies more than 10% of the items. Must be shown how to make the circuit. Creates either a series or parallel circuit to light three or more bulbs light.
Level 1
Non
Proficient
Cannot consistently distinguish between conductor and insulator. No attempt is made. Does not complete either type of circuit.

Scoring Process:

Level 4 = Total 11 - 12
Level 3 = Total 9 - 10
Level 2 = Total 6 - 8
Level 1 = Total 3 - 5
