ASK JEEVES for SCHOOLS Best either for locating a quick answer to a common question or as a first step in exploring a fairly broad topic.

GOOGLE A great search engine with lots of helpful options. Highly recommended.
HOTBOT Powerful, easy-to-use menus, clean interface, and effective search routines. From LYCOS
KIDS CLICK! A resource "for kids by librarians," with a collection of sites chosen by professional librarians who sign up to be reviewers.
Recommended: Grades K-6

 LITTLE EXPLORERS A picture-dictionary format is used to link to hundreds of carefully chosen child-friendly sites around the world. The pictures are links, helpful for early readers.

 METACRAWLER A multi-threaded web search that searches many of these other search engines.
 VIVISIMO A meta-search tool that searches sites like Google, Yahoo!, and AltaVista and compiles the results in a useful fashion. Vivisimo uses a clustering algorithm that detects patterns in the results and then groups them in folders of like topics.
 YAHOO! A very good subject-based search engine. Well known for its extensive directory.
 YAHOOLIGANS A modified version of the extensive Yahoo! directory, with sites selected especially for younger users.

 Boolean Terms at a Glance

  • AND or + matches all the words or phrases entered (most of the sites recognize + word).

  • OR matches any of the words or phrases.

  • NOT or - avoids specified words or phrases (most search sites recognize -word).

  • " " around a group of words designates them as an exact phrase to be matched.

  • * serves as a wildcard for multiple letters (for example, "attract*" would direct the site to search for attract or attraction or attractive).

  • % serves as a wildcard for a single letter (for example, wom%n would match woman or women).
