William Sublette
William Sublette was born in Lincoln County, Kentucky and grew up in St. Charles, Missouri. He left Missouri and went to Wyoming to become a trapper. At one point, he and his two partners earned $170,000 with their successful trapping.
In 1829 William spent a Fourth of July at Independence Rock. When David Jackson and William Sublette were searching for beaver and trying their luck to see if they could trap any, they came across Yellowstone and discovered the geysers in 1826. William first christened Jackson Hole in 1829.
He has his name dedicated to a fort that was later renamed Fort Laramie. Also, Sublette County and Sublette's Cutoff near South Pass are titled in honor of his name.
William Sublette had a leg amputated and died at Fort Laramie.
