The American Civil War

The American Civil War (1861–1865) was foght between the Northern and Southern states of America. Tensions arose due to an increasing sentiment of anti-slavery in the North and the slave-owning South.
It was the election of Abraham Lincoln in 1860 that prompted the historical withdrawal of eleven Southern states from the union. Although Abraham Lincoln did not outlaw any existing slavery, he and his winning party campained that slavery would not be allowed to spread any further. This secession of the southern states from the union was the primary cause of the American Civil War.
In the spring of 1865, when the Confederate armies surrendered, slavery ended. It was the Emancipation Proclamation that declared the freedom of all slaves.
